There has been a hot springs inn on this site for over 1300 years, it sits on a winding mountain road with nothing else near it. As soon as I saw the view from my alcove, looking over a little burbling stream with the tall mountains in full autumn plumage rising beyond the stream, I started to relax. And when I had my first bath, in two pools in the big bath and then in the outdoor bath, I relaxed even further. This hotel is all about the onsen and the food, which was sublime. The staff were wonderful, and I do think they have taken omotenashi, the Japanese notion of hospitality, to new heights. I went there at the end of my trip to Japan, to rest and relax before flying home. However if you want to use this hotel as a base to visit places, you will need a car.

I can't believe we got to spend a few days here. It was an amazing break in the middle of our trip to Japan. Stepping into the hotel takes you to another world of quiet and relaxation. The staff was incredible and I haven't been that relaxed in ages. Those amazing dinners in a private room were the highlight of our trip, along with the onsen. The beds were traditional and incredibly comfortable, and I took more naps than I can count. This whole trip was peaceful, and I can't recommend and thank the staff at the hotel enough - they took great care of us and were so kind.

We chose this ryokan because itʻs the oldest continuously operated ryokan in Japan and the oldest hotel in the world. Itʻs no surprise that theyʻve been in business for so long because the service is exceptional as are the facilities, onsen and the exquisite food!! The ryokan is in the mountains with not much around, but itʻs ok because the point of going to a place like this is to stay on the property and enjoy the different hot springs, then relax to the sound of the river in your room. The meals alone were worth the price of our stay!

This was an experience that exceeded my expectations. A traditional room. The only reason I did not put top marks for comfy beds is because we slept on traditional futons. The location is so tranquil and beautiful. We had a private dining room for our banquet dinner and breakfast. We booked the traditional private onsen which is a must. Be warned its HOT. Everything was amazing.

Carla

This onsen was nothing short of magical. The rooms were very traditional and incredibly charming. The food was exquisite and plentiful. We were able to completely immerse ourselves into Japanese tradition from the setting, the robes we got to wear, the sandals, and the private onsen available to be reserved. It was incredibly beautiful and we couldn't recommend it more.
